Bo: WOW! Cheyenne, those are very cool!
Cheyenne: No Bo, not really!
Bo: Why’s that Cheyenne?
Cheyenne: Because that’s a photo from NASA and that’s Planet Earth surrounded by space junk!
Bo: Geez! You’re kiddin’ me--right?
Cheyenne: No kidding at all, Bo! For MILLIONS of years, outer-space was “clean”--just natural, organic stuff! Humans first put an object into orbit in 1957. So now--a mere 52 years later--our astronauts at the International Space Station (“ISS”) are literally “dodging” human made space junk!
Bo: WOW! Cheyenne, that’s unbelievable!
Cheyenne: No, not really, Bo! Humans polluted Planet Earth during the Industrial Revolution, because there was soooo much of everything! The attitude was: What harm could there possibly be with soooo much of everything? Same attitude with outer space, right? Just let future generations clean up the junk, right?
Bo: Yeah, I guess you’re right, Cheyenne!
Cheyenne: Yup! I guess you can’t teach old humans any new tricks!

Space Garbage Facts! The first launch of Earth's man-made satellite was in 1957. About 800 satellites are currently functioning out of the total number of 5,600. The connection with the rest of the satellites has been lost. A huge amount of fragments and debris--from screwdrivers to fuel tanks--orbit the planet today. Humans now have space garbage on the Moon and Planet Mars! Check your local sky for future updates!
